Bill Gates, 67-year-old Microsoft co-founder and former world’s richest man expressed excitement about returning to the country 12 years after his last visits. American businessman is in Kenya from today to meet key government officials, private sector players, regional scientists, innovators and other stakeholders in the private sector. He is expected to hold a series of public engagements.Bill Gates will tour Makueni County and will be hosted by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr. Reports indicate that he will visit the Makueni Mother and Child hospital and Kathonzweni Health Centre.
The businessman is expected to engage university students at the University of Nairobi (UoN) in a hybrid conference to be moderated by former Citizen TV journalist Uduak Amimo on Thursday, November 17. The meeting will be on learning and sharing perspectives on how innovative tools and approaches that can bolster efforts to increase food security and support climate adaptation across Africa.
The event will include a live audience of 500 students from universities in Nairobi and a virtual audience of students from universities across the continent.
The Microsoft co-founder will announce Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s commitment to supporting new innovations and ingenuity aimed at improving health, food security, and gender equality in African countries.
Together with the foundation leaders, they will visit and learn from farmers who are using digital tools to help with climate adaptation, see how primary health care clinics have delivered care during the pandemic and helped address ongoing threats like HIV, TB, and malaria.
He also will focus on climate change initiatives in the country with a specific focus on farmers. Bill announced ,”This includes an innovative weather intelligence platform developed through a new partnership between the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and TomorrowNow, which provides climate-smart agriculture strategies to farmers in East Africa via text messages,”
