Kenya’s summer season is at its height in January, making it an ideal time to visit for wildlife viewing. Although the temperatures are high, January is an excellent time to visit the beaches on the Kenyan coast because it falls outside of the two noteworthy “long” and “short” rainy seasons.
Another fantastic month for a safari in Kenya is February. While the coast is very hot during the day and gets even hotter at night, the middle highlands are warm during the day and cool at night. The Masai Mara receives the least amount of precipitation in February compared to the rest of the year, which increases the likelihood of seeing wild animals near drinking holes. February is where to go in Kenya to conquer Africa’s second highest peak, Mount Kenya.
The weather in March changes from “hot and dry” to “wet and rainy” very quickly. In many portions of the country, it rains frequently, turning the savannah into a muddy terrain and making travel to some places challenging due to impassable roads. The fact that there are less people and lower prices makes up for the less than ideal weather.
One of Kenya’s wettest and rainiest months is April. While Mombasa is warm both during the day and at night, Nairobi and the central highlands are warm during the day and cool at night. This month can be difficult for game drives on muddy roads, but it’s a great time to go on safari if you’re a photographer. No dust is present, the scenery is lovely, and beautifully green, and the skies provide moody backdrops for incredible wildlife images. Just be sure to protect your equipment from the elements!
May brings heavy rains that saturate the African plains, making the beaches along the coast less of a sunny paradise. It’s not the best time to escape to a beach with powder-soft sand.
The long dry season, which begins in the months of June through to October, is regarded as the ideal time to visit Kenya for a safari that is truly “Out of Africa.” During these dry months, the weather is at its best, wildlife gathers around water sources, and there is a sense of expectation as the mega-herds of the Great Migration approach the Masai Mara.
You may have a front-row seat to dramatic river crossings as the herds of Mother Nature’s greatest spectacle begin to arrive in the Masai Mara during the end of July. Although it is dry and not overly dusty, the weather is moderate, and there is still a chance of sporadic showers.
The Great Migration reaches its peak in August. The weather is pleasant, and thousands of zebras and wildebeest execute their perilous river crossings with waiting crocodiles, stirring activity can be seen. September’s weather is often dry, and game viewing activity continues.
The migratory herds typically begin leaving the Masai Mara in October, but Kenya has an abundance of local wildlife that will keep safari aficionados happy in the Big 5 region.
The short rainy season begins in November, and while most parks and camps are still open, others on the Laikipia Plateau close. Despite the rain, now is a fantastic time to take advantage of a cheaper, less crowded Kenya safari.
Despite the possibility of rain and the possibility of extreme heat, observing the local fauna is, as always, amazing. As bird populations soar at this time of year, December is also fantastic for birdwatchers.
