Ndere Island National Park is located in a small island in Kenya’s Lake Victoria’s Winam Golf. The park was established in November 1986. Locals refer to the park as Chula Rabour, which translates to “Red Island” from the words “Chula” and “Island.” Themeda grass species cover the island, and their ripe flowers appear crimson.
Ndere Island, which is primarily made up of grassland and is sprinkled with walking routes, offers stunning views of the Homa Hills to the south, Mageta Island to the east, and Kampala, Uganda, in the distance to the southwest. The island has a distinctive ecology with a wide variety of species. Hippos, monitor lizards, Nile crocodiles, several fish species, snakes, baboons, impalas, the endangered sitatunga antelopes, water bucks, zebras, and warthogs are among the many wildlife species that call the island home. A refuge for birdwatchers, this area is home to over 100 different species of birds, including African fish eagles, black-headed gonoleks, and grey-headed kingfishers.
Nature walks, birdwatching, boat trips, fishing, and camping are some of the activities that visitors to Ndere Island National Park can partake in. The park offers breathtaking views of Lake Victoria, as well as chances for leisure and photography in a tranquil setting. Although the park is open all year round, the dry season, which lasts from June to September, is thought to be the greatest time to see animals. The Kenya Wildlife Service, which oversees park management, assures the preservation and protection of the island’s natural resources.
