Shaba National Reserve

Shaba National Reserve is a protected area in the East of the Samburu and Buffalo Springs national reserves in Northern Kenya. The three reserves come together to create a sizable protected area. One of Kenya’s less frequented locations is the Shaba National Reserve, which is away from the main tourist routes. It is one of the most northern parks in the nation, and in complete seclusion you may explore the amazing scenery north of Mount Kenya.

Shaba, which was established in 1974, has used as the backdrop for several movies, including Born Free, Out of Africa, and most recently, Survivor 3. With a total size of 239 sq km and a harsh and gorgeous landscape dominated by Shaba Hill in the southern part and surrounded by deep ravines, leopards love to hang out in Shaba. North of Archer’s Post, there are excellent views of the Sugarloaf Mount Ol Ololokwe. The reserve, which is divided in half by the Ewaso Nyiro River, contains expanses of lava-strewn grasslands and riverine woodland with ragged doum palms, as well as several springs and marshy areas that lead into the Lorian Swamp.

The reticulated giraffe, Grévy’s zebra, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk are the principal draws. There are many of elephants, as well as black rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, and hyenas. Vervet monkeys scurry about in the undergrowth as dik-diks are constantly darting over the red roads. The birdlife is remarkably prolific and colorful for such a tiny region. The enormous flocks of helmeted and vulturine guinea fowl that travel to the river bank each afternoon to drink are arguably the most stunning. Marabou storks in great numbers and sandgrouse and doves in their thousands may both be seen patrolling the skies.

More people are familiar with the Shaba National Reserve for its scenery than for its fauna. If you’ve previously seen the Big Five, spend some time to take in the region’s amazing vegetation and lesser-known animal species. The Gafarsa Gate, Shaba Gate, and Natorbe Gate are the three entrances of the Shaba National Reserve.
