The Kisumu Museum

The Kisumu Museum is situated inside Milimani Estate in Kisumu town, along the Kisumu-Kericho route.

In 1980, it became publicly accessible. The museum collects, preserves, and disseminates data on scientific and cultural topics, with a focus on Western Kenya.

Exhibits consist of;

  • Snake Park
  • Fish Aquarium
  • A gallery of cultural history
  • Traditional homestead among other things.

The museum offers educational services to schools in the lake region and elsewhere.

Additionally, research activities are heavily featured. The International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) at Mbita in Homa Bay County has recently launched a global investigation on the limnology (a scientific characteristic of fresh water lakes) of Lake Victoria, in which the Kisumu Museum has taken part.

The Museum serves as a focal point for local and international conferences and workshops. One of the few green spaces in Kisumu city, the museum compound is built on a 10 acre plot of ground and is open to both residents and visitors.A variety of historically significant locations and structures, such as Fort Tenan, Songhor, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum, Thimlich Ohinga World Heritage Site, and Tom Mboya Mausoleum, are connected to Kisumu Museum.
