Mambrui is a quiet coastal settlement in Kilifi County, just north of Malindi, best known for its striking golden sand dunes that meet the Indian Ocean. Many travelers visit from Mombasa for a day trip or overnight stay. The journey follows the well-used Mombasa–Malindi highway (B8) and is straightforward by road.
Distance and Travel Time from Mombasa to Mambrui
Mombasa to Malindi is roughly 117–120 km and typically takes 2–2.5 hours by car in normal traffic. Mambrui lies another 11–15 km north of Malindi (about 20–30 minutes), so the total distance from central Mombasa is around 130–140 km and the full drive usually takes 2.5–3 hours
From Moi International Airport (MBA) the distance is longer (around 145–153 km) because the airport sits south of Mombasa Island; allow about 3 hours.
Road conditions on the B8 are generally good, though you should expect some traffic near Mombasa, Mtwapa, and Kilifi, plus possible slowdowns from ongoing highway works.
Option 1: Private Tour by Tripsasa (Most Convenient)
A private tour or pre-booked airport/hotel transfer by TripSasa is the fastest and most comfortable choice, especially if you have luggage or are traveling with a group.
- Book a private all-inclusive tour or transfer from your hotel in Mombasa, Nyali, or Bamburi, or from Moi Airport.
- The driver follows the B8 north through Nyali Bridge, Mtwapa, Kilifi, and Malindi, then continues a short distance toward the Malindi–Lamu road and the Mambrui turn-off.
- Journey time: 2.5–3 hours from town, a bit longer from the airport.
This option is ideal if you want door-to-door service and do not want to change vehicles in Malindi.
Option 2: Bus or Matatu to Malindi + Tuk-Tuk or Boda Boda (Budget-Friendly)
This is the most common and cheapest public-transport route.Step 1: Mombasa to Malindi
- Long-distance coaches such as Tawakal Coach and Tahmeed operate Mombasa–Malindi services several times a day. Journey time is often quoted around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2.5 hours.
Express matatus (shared minibuses) also run frequently from Mombasa stages (commonly around Mwembe Tayari or similar central points) and offer more flexible departure times than scheduled coaches.
Some Lamu-bound buses pass through or near Mambrui and can drop you there if you ask the conductor.
Fares on coaches and matatus are significantly lower than a private taxi.
Step 2: Malindi to Mambrui From Malindi town or the bus stage, take a tuk-tuk or boda boda (motorcycle taxi) the remaining 15–20 minutes to Mambrui or the sand-dune access road. A typical tuk-tuk round trip to the dunes has been quoted around KSh 600.
Tell the driver you want Mambrui or the sand dunes; most local drivers know the turn-off. The last stretch from the main highway to the dunes is often best done in a smaller vehicle.
Option 3: Self-Drive
Rent a car in Mombasa and follow the B8 / Mombasa–Malindi Road north. After Malindi, continue on the Malindi–Lamu highway. Watch for the Mambrui / sand-dune sign and turn onto the access road (often a short dirt or laterite stretch).
A standard 2WD is usually sufficient in dry weather. Fuel is available in Mombasa, Kilifi, and Malindi. Carry cash and your driving licence and ID, as there can be police checks.
