Aberdare National Park is known for its majestic peaks, fascinating waterfalls, dense rainforest, and vast moorlands. About 150 kilometers (km) east of Nairobi, Aberdare National Park is easily reachable from Nyeri and Naro Moru. From Naivasha, the Park is 87 kilometers away.
In addition to multiple crystal-clear streams and waterfalls, some of which plunge 300 meters into the thick forest, the geography of the National Park is varied, with steep ravines cutting through its forested eastern and western borders. Among the many waterfalls that offer breathtaking beauty are Gura Falls, Chania Falls, and Karuru Falls. For the Athi and Tana Rivers, as well as a portion of the Northern and Central Rift drainage basins, the region is an essential water catchment area.
The Park is a hiking, picnicking, trout fishing, camping, and wildlife paradise, home to the second-largest herd of black rhinos in Kenya as well as other elusive species like the Mountain Bongos (giant antelopes) and the black Leopard. Elephants, leopards, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, buffalo, warthogs, and bushbucks may all be found in the park.
With more than 250 different bird species in the park, including the Jackson’s Francolin, Sparrow Hawks, Goshawks, Eagles, Sunbirds, and Plovers, bird watching is rewarding.
