Buffalo Springs National Reserve is a protected area in Isiolo County in northern Kenya. The current boundaries of the reserve were established in 1985, however it was originally established in 1948 as a component of the Samburu-Isiolo Game Reserve. The three reserves of Buffalo Springs, Samburu, and Shaba are similar and close to one another. Buffalo Springs is one of the most reliable locations in Kenya for leopard sightings and offers fantastic animal watching.
The reserve is called for the springs, a permanent wetland that receives its water from underground and is home to a variety of animals throughout the dry season. The “Samburu Five”—the reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, and Beisa oryx—and other wildlife species are found in the reserve. Other creatures discovered in the reserve include elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, and baboons, among others.

Great egrets, martial eagles, African darters, and yellow-billed oxpeckers are some other vulnerable species. Bee-eaters, yellow-billed hornbills, lilac-breasted rollers, grey-headed kingfishers, and many other species are common. Buffalo Springs’ vegetation is primarily made up of Commiphora-containing wilderness and Acacia woods. The toothbrush trees are another favorite of the elephants in the reserve.
On the edges of the reserve, Samburu pastoralists have a semi-nomadic lifestyle; a visit to a traditional homestead is essential.
