Lake Bogoria National Reserve is located in Baringo County, which is about 270 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. Road access is available to the Reserve. Between Nakuru and Marigat, off the B4 highway, is where you’ll find the reserve. By automobile, the trip from Nairobi takes about 4 to 5 hours.
The Reserve is a stunning location, home to flamingos in a pink cloud and geysers that bubble with the most amazing hot volcanic springs. Acacia thorny vegetation dominates the Reserve, while grasslands dominate the broad lakeshores and sedge cyperus surrounds the hot springs. They are the enormous flamingo flocks that frequent the quiet waters of the lake to feed on the algae. In addition to the pink of the flamingos, the lake has other colors due to the abundance of blue and green algae that grows there because the lake has no outlet. Around 200 hot springs make up Lake Bogoria, but some of the larger ones are concentrated on one side of the lake. The water circulates at tremendous depth in the rock fissures, reaching a temperature of nearly 94 degrees by the time it shoots off the ground. An egg can be boiled in this heat.
The larger Kudu can be seen wandering through the forest or relaxing under acacia bushes. On the plains, you can view Burchell’s zebras, impalas, gazelles, and warthogs. Around the hot springs and campsites vervet monkeys and olive baboons can be seen and also the predators such as leopards, spotted hyenas and mongooses are hots of the reserve too. When they congregate in flocks during the mating seasons, when many pairs and mate-seeking adults converge, the grey crowned crane, one of the most elegant birds, can be seen performing wooing dances. On the lakeshores, there are many common ostriches, and in the marshes, there are sacred ibises, hadadas, and black-headed herons. The lake is rather salty, thus there aren’t many aquatic birds there.
With its gorgeous scenery, including the lake itself, surrounding hills, and the Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Bogoria National Reserve offers breathtaking natural beauty.
