Soysambu Conservancy is a non-profit organization that strives to preserve the Soysambu Estate as a traditional wildlife refuge. This in turn promotes sustainable coexistence of wildlife and cattle while being pertinent to contemporary Kenya and preserving the integrity of the larger Rift Valley eco-system.
In addition to being a Ramsar Convention Wetlands Site and a BirdLife International-Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, Soysambu Conservancy is situated on Lake Elmenteita and is part of the “Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley” World Heritage Site. Volcanoes Ol Doinyo Eburru to the south, Menengai to the north, and Lake Nakuru National Park to the west all abut Soysambu Conservancy.
Lesser Flamingos, which make up 28% of the world’s population, and 10,000 mammals from over 50 species, including 90 or more Rothschild’s Giraffe, which make up 10% of the species’ global population, live on its 48,000 acres of diverse ecological significance. This private conservation area provides camping and quite a bit of wildlife viewing. Colobus monkeys, Rothschild’s giraffes, and over 450 different bird species call it home.
The majority of the Soysambu Conservancy is savannah and acacia forest, although the resting places of the species are hidden within the trees. Just a short trip from Nairobi, and you might spend the weekend here.
